stories from people

Our family decided to volunteer at St Vinnys Bistro during the Christmas season while everyone was home for the holidays. We showed up early and was introduced to the kitchen staff. They were very friendly and gave us our assigned duties. When the doors opened, the organized line of homeless quickly moved through the line. They were kind and very thankful for our service. This was a eye opening experience that taught our family how special it is to serve others and thankful we need to be for our blessings. I highly recommend all families to volunteer at St Vinnys Bistro.

I was apprehensive about serving and seeing the homeless in our city. After arriving, the kitchen staff made me feel at home. We helped prepare each course per Chef Lorris instructions. As the doors opened, I immediately experienced the reason I was called to serve. The need was so great and the homeless were happy to see the volunteers. I quickly learned I could talk with anyone over a hot meal. St Vinnys Bistro is a special place that feeds anyone with joy. Volunteering was a special blessing.

Our group went to serve during winter which is a tough time to be homeless and on the streets even in San Antonio. With the night time temperatures in the 30's, the dinning hall was packed with folks trying to get out of the cold. Our team of volunteers served back to back nights. The first night we served a nice breaded Chicken Cutlet with marinara sauce over pasta, green beans, bread and dessert. The second night, we served steak-fingers covered in country gravy, mashed potatoes, salad, bread and dessert. We served about 460 men and women each night. Thanks again to our supporters who make it possible for the homeless in our city to sit down to a hot, nutritious meal on a cold winter night.
